Complex diseases such as cancer can show markedly distinct phases that differ in their biological characterization and, crucially, in our ability to treat them. But what drives disease progression? How do different stages of disease differ? And how can we determine the stage of disease in a particular patient? In my work, I address these questions by coupling mechanistic models of cancer progression in myeloproliferative neoplasms with patient data, aiming for a better understanding of phase transitions in complex diseases that will inform and improve diagnosis and therapy.
